Prayer is Necessary
“Prayer is the root, the fountain, the mother of a thousand blessings,” -Saint John Chrysostom
As I was watching the P-W Girls Varsity Basketball Game, I couldn’t help but reflect on my own high school basketball experiences. I specifically remember on the amount I spent practicing for the sport. The games, season practices, weightlifting, 4-person workouts, AAU teams, summer basketball, physical therapy, and the list goes on and on. I WANTED to do all of this to become the best basketball player for my team.
If I could spend that much time practicing a sport, why can’t i spend a fraction of that time in daily prayer?
I had no problem spending 2 plus hours on basketball per day but spending 20 minutes in day prayer? I am always distracted. I realized that it is easy to work toward goals where you can see progress and those goals, while important, are short-term. Prayer is a skill that takes time to develop and sharpen, and it is a tool used for the end goal: heaven.
Daily prayer just like a sport, takes discipline. Carving a part of your day, no matter how big or small, to take time to be with the Lord is necessary. I noticed when I started my day with prayer or christian songs on my way to work, my day was better. When I communicate with the Lord throughout the day, my day seems to go smoother.
My challenge for each of you and myself is to spend time in daily prayer regularly and increasingly. Write in a journal to see how you grow and how your prayers are answered throughout the journey.
